Chapter 9

Morton Crawly Brings Stickers

“I told Hattie about the watches.”

“What? Why?” Lang said.

The two were walking home from school.

“As it turns out, she’s trying to get into the mines, too. She’s part of some weird exploration thing called the Uncanny Club.”

“So she knows a way in?”

“She’s working on it. Also, Persi called. She’s in too, she’s getting Zap Sap.”

“Really?”

“Yep. And Jacoby Dread sent me a package with money and a note saying to bring back the book.”

“Whoa, really?

“I guess he finally figured out we took it. So what should we do? Give it back?”

“This is a lot of new information in the span of a minute.” Lang scratched his head. “Ok, let’s see. We don’t need the book anymore. As long as we keep the translated papers, we should be fine.”

“Want to head over now?”

“Actually do you think you could do it? My dad’s driving the bus today, he wants to take me for a ride. Here, I’ve been keeping it with me.” He pulled out the book from his backpack.

“If I’m not in school tomorrow, you’re in charge of my search party. I feel like he’s going to put me in a secret dungeon or something.”

“You’ll be alright. Just don’t let him catch on that we know what the book says. And try to get one of his hairs.”

Henry made his way to Sable Avenue. A light drizzle materialized from the gloomy sky and collected on his eyelashes. This time the Dread Manor gates were attended by two guards, large men dressed in gray overcoats.

“I’m Henry Bats,” he said, staring up at the men.

They looked at each other, nodded, and opened the gate. Henry walked through and casually tossed the money bundle Jacoby had given him into the cherub fountain. The front door was opened by his old friend Ferdinand, eyes as lifeless as ever. “Right this way,” he said.

Ferdinand led Henry to the right wing of the mansion, past the knights and contorted animal statues that twisted around like clay, into a room plastered with dingy yellow curtains contrasting the gray brick walls. A candle chandelier hung in the center over a dining table with two chairs, one of which was occupied by Jacoby Dread. He was reading a newspaper, sipping tea. In front of him was a bite-sized dessert assortment perfectly centered on a black tray.

“Mr Henry Bats,” Ferdinand announced and stationed himself beside the wall.

Jacoby turned a newspaper page. “Have a seat. Feel free to eat as many Screampuffs as you want.” Henry sat down and put the book on his lap. “The groundskeeper found your reward money in the fountain. What a waste, it’s all wrinkly now,” he said, his eyes glued to the paper. “I see you brought the book.”

“If this is all you want, can I just give it to you and go?”

“I have some questions. First, how did you find out about it? I assume that’s why you were trailing water around the dining hall at midnight.”

He answered honestly, “We didn’t know about the book beforehand, we just thought you were hiding something.
